Porto Moniz is one of the oldest locations of the Madeira Island.
It was named by first owners of the lands: Francisco Moniz and Filipa
da Câmara, great-granddaughter of one the discoverers of the
island, João Gonçalves Zarco. Until the 2nd World
War, this town was isolated from the rest of the island and connections
were made by sea. It was only then that the first road was built
between Porto Moniz and São Vicente along the seaside. This
is still on of the most beautiful roads in the island, known for
its astonishing landscapes, such as the "Véu da Noiva",
a sizeable water cascade.
Porto Moniz is divided in four zones: Porto Moniz, Seixal, Achadas
da Cruz e Ribeira da Janela.
